Battery light on while driving

Steps to fix battery light on while driving

  1. Understand the message: the battery light while driving points at the charging system, meaning the car may be running on stored battery power only.
  2. Turn off anything you do not need — A/C, heated seats, radio, extra lights — to stretch the remaining charge.
  3. Head toward a safe stopping point or a mechanic while you still have power, rather than a long detour.
  4. If the belt that drives the alternator is squealing or the steering suddenly gets heavy too, the drive belt may be failing — stop sooner.
  5. Do not switch the engine off unless parked safely — with a weak charging system it may not restart.
  6. When in doubt about how far it will make it, do not push it — pull over safely and have it checked before it strands you.
