Steps to fix brake warning light on (red)

  1. Check the easy one first: make sure the parking brake is fully released — a partly-set parking brake often lights this up.
  2. If the light stays on with the parking brake fully off, treat it as a possible hydraulic brake fault, which is serious.
  3. Press the brake pedal gently at low speed: if it feels soft, low, or sinks toward the floor, do not keep driving.
  4. Low brake fluid usually means a leak or badly worn pads — both need a professional, not a top-up-and-forget.
  5. STOP-NOW CAVEAT: a red brake light with any change in how the pedal feels means get off the road safely and call for a tow.
  6. When in doubt, do not drive — brakes are the one system where guessing is not worth it; have a mechanic check it.
