Car shakes at highway speed

Steps to fix car shakes at highway speed

  1. Notice when it happens: a shake that starts around a certain highway speed and smooths out below it usually points to the wheels or tires.
  2. Look the tires over for uneven wear, a bulge, a bubble in the sidewall, or a chunk missing from the tread.
  3. Check that all tires are at the correct pressure from the door-jamb sticker, since a badly low tire can shake at speed.
  4. If the shake is felt mainly through the steering wheel, it often means front wheels need balancing; through the seat points more to the rear.
  5. A tire with a visible bulge or bubble can blow out — do not keep driving on it at highway speed; swap to the spare or get it towed.
  6. For a shake that will not go away, have a shop balance the wheels and inspect tires, suspension, and brakes before a long trip.
