Car won't start, just clicks

When your car won't start and just clicks, the most common cause is a weak or dead battery — enough power to click the starter solenoid, but not enough to spin the engine. Steps to fix car won't start, just clicks

  1. Notice the clue: a single click or rapid clicking with no crank usually means the battery is too weak to turn the starter.
  2. Check the dashboard and headlights — if they are dim or dead, that points at the battery or its connections.
  3. Look at the battery terminals for looseness or white/green crusty corrosion; a bad connection can cause the click even with a decent battery.
  4. SAFETY: a car battery can spark and its acid can burn — wear eye protection, keep metal tools off both terminals at once, and no flames or sparks near it.
  5. If it is just a flat battery, a careful jump-start (following your owner's manual order) often gets it going — then drive to have the battery and charging system tested.
  6. If a jump does not help, or it clicks with a healthy battery, the starter or a connection may be failing — have a mechanic diagnose it.
