Steps to fix check engine light on (solid)

  1. Confirm the light is steady and NOT flashing — a flashing check engine light is a different, urgent situation covered separately.
  2. Check the simplest cause first: pull over safely, and make sure the fuel cap is on tight and clicked — a loose cap is a very common trigger.
  3. Notice how the car is behaving: if power, idle, and sound feel normal, a solid light means drive gently and get it scanned soon, not stop on the spot.
  4. This app cannot read your car's trouble codes — there is no scanner plugged in — so it never guesses a specific code; describe what you see and feel instead.
  5. If the light comes on with rough running, loss of power, or any new noise or smell, treat it as more serious and get to a mechanic sooner.
