A check engine light on while your car shakes or runs rough almost always means the engine is misfiring — a cylinder not firing right. Steps to fix check engine light on and car shaking

  1. Look at the light first: if the check engine light is FLASHING while it shakes, treat it as a stop-now misfire and pull over safely right away.
  2. A flashing light with shaking means active engine damage — get off the road, put it in park with hazards on, and call for a tow, do not drive on.
  3. If the light is STEADY (not flashing) and the shake is mild, you can drive gently to a mechanic soon, but do not ignore it.
  4. Notice the pattern — a rough idle at a stop or a stumble under acceleration both point at a misfire from ignition or fuel parts.
  5. This app cannot read your car's trouble codes, so it will not name the bad cylinder or part — a shop scan does that.
  6. When in doubt, do not drive — a shaking engine with a check engine light needs a mechanic before it gets worse.
