DEF light on (diesel)

A DEF light on a diesel truck means the diesel exhaust fluid is running low, or the emissions system has flagged a fluid-quality or system fault. This is one warning you cannot outwait: by federal design it escalates from countdown messages to speed limits and eventually a truck that will not restart. Steps to fix def light on (diesel)

  1. Start with the most common cause: the DEF tank is simply low, and refilling it now usually clears the light and avoids the derate entirely.
  2. Refill only with fresh DEF from a sealed container, and only into the DEF filler — never put DEF in the fuel tank or diesel in the DEF tank.
  3. Do not ignore the countdown messages — the system escalates by design, first capping speed at 65 mph, then 45 mph, and eventually refusing to restart or limping at 5 mph.
  4. If the light stays on after a proper refill, the system has flagged a fluid-quality or system fault instead — old or contaminated DEF can trigger that too.
  5. This app cannot read your truck's trouble codes — there is no scanner plugged in — so it never guesses which emissions fault is stored; describe the messages you see instead.
  6. Get a quality or system fault to a diesel shop before the countdown expires — once the truck derates or blocks restarting, you are fixing it on a tow truck's schedule.
