Steps to fix engine power reduced (chevy/gm)

  1. Understand the message: Engine Power Reduced is GM's fail-safe limp mode — the computer found a failure, almost always in the electronic throttle system, and capped power to protect the drivetrain.
  2. Expect the car to feel sluggish and speed-limited while the message is up — that is the protection working, not a second problem on top.
  3. You can limp gently to a safe spot or a nearby shop, but do not plan a long drive on it.
  4. Know the classic causes on Silverado, Malibu, Cruze, and Equinox models: carbon buildup on the throttle body, or pedal and throttle sensor readings that disagree with each other.
