Glow plug light flashing (diesel)

On a diesel car, the coil-shaped glow plug light normally glows for a few seconds at startup while the engine pre-heats — but a flashing glow plug light means the engine computer has logged a fault and wants attention. Steps to fix glow plug light flashing (diesel)

  1. Know the normal case: on a cold start the glow plug light glows steadily for a few seconds — wait for it to go out before cranking the engine.
  2. A flashing glow plug light is different — it means a stored fault, not just pre-heating, so note when it started flashing.
  3. You can usually still drive, but do so gently and at moderate speed until it is diagnosed, since it can hint at glow-plug, fuel, or DPF issues.
  4. Watch for hard cold starts, rough idle, or loss of power alongside the flashing light — those point to a real problem to fix sooner.
  5. This app cannot read the car's fault codes, so it will not guess which system tripped it — a diesel shop can pull that.
  6. When in doubt about how it is running, do not push it — have a diesel mechanic check the glow-plug and related systems.
