Steps to fix low fuel light on

  1. Refuel soon: the low fuel light means limited range remains, and how far varies a lot by car, so do not treat any 'miles to empty' as exact.
  2. Ease off hard acceleration and high speed to stretch the fuel you have left toward the nearest station.
  3. Understand the extra risk: fuel helps cool and lubricate the fuel pump, so habitually running near empty can overheat and wear it out early.
  4. Running very low can also stir sediment from the bottom of the tank into the fuel filter and pump — another reason not to make it a habit.
  5. If you do run dry, get fuel to it and only crank in short tries; long cranking to prime the system can strain the starter and pump.
  6. If it stalls in traffic, get the car to a safe spot with the hazards on and, when in doubt about restarting safely, call for help.
