Steps to fix oil pressure light on while driving

  1. STOP THE ENGINE — the red oil pressure light means pull over safely and turn the engine OFF immediately, because running it can destroy the engine in minutes.
  2. Get the car fully off the road first; if you must move a short distance to safety, keep it as brief as absolutely possible, then shut it down.
  3. Do not confuse this red pressure light with the yellow 'oil change due' reminder — the red one is the emergency, the yellow one is just maintenance.
  4. Once the engine is off and cooled a bit, pull the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert it fully, and pull it again to read the true oil level.
  5. If the oil is clearly low, adding oil may help — but if the level looks fine, or the light returns after topping up, do not keep driving.
  6. When in doubt, do not drive — get it towed and have a mechanic find why the pressure dropped before the engine runs again.
