Security light on, car won't start

When the security light is on and your car won't start, the factory anti-theft system — the immobilizer — does not recognize your key, so it is blocking the engine on purpose. The most common cause is also the cheapest: a dead coin battery inside the key fob. Steps to fix security light on, car won't start

  1. Know what the light means: the car-with-a-padlock or key symbol says the immobilizer is deliberately blocking the engine because it does not recognize your key.
  2. Try the cheapest fix first: the fob's coin battery — usually a CR2025 or CR2032 — going dead is the most common cause, so replace it and try again.
  3. Try your spare key next; if the spare starts the car, the problem is the first key or its battery, not the car itself.
  4. On many cars, leaving the key in the ignition at the ON position for about 10 minutes lets the security system reset — check your owner's manual for your car's exact procedure.

  6. If a fresh fob battery and the spare key both fail, the key or immobilizer needs reprogramming — that is a dealer or automotive-locksmith job, not a DIY one.
