Temperature warning light on

A red engine temperature warning light on your car means the engine is overheating, and driving on can blow a head gasket or crack the engine block. The single most important rule: never open a hot radiator cap — trapped pressure and scalding coolant cause serious burns. Steps to fix temperature warning light on

  1. Pull over to a safe spot as soon as you can and turn the engine OFF — an overheating engine damages fast if you keep driving.
  2. To buy a little time before you can stop, turn the A/C OFF and the heater on full — it pulls heat off the engine.
  3. MANDATORY SAFETY: never open the radiator or coolant cap while the engine is hot — pressurized, near-boiling coolant can spray out and cause severe burns.
  4. Let the engine cool for at least 20 minutes with the hood up before you go near the cap or check anything.
  5. Once fully cool, check the coolant reservoir level, but only ever open a cap on a cold engine.
  6. When in doubt, do not drive — get it towed; repeated overheating means a real cooling-system problem for a mechanic.
