Tire pressure (TPMS) light on

A tire pressure (TPMS) light on your car means at least one tire is low on air — often from a slow leak or a cold snap dropping the pressure. Low tires wear out fast, hurt handling, and can fail at speed, so it is worth checking soon. Steps to fix tire pressure (tpms) light on

  1. Find the correct pressure for your car — it is on a sticker in the driver's door jamb, not the number molded on the tire sidewall.
  2. Check all four tires with a gauge when they are cold (before driving far), since driving warms them and raises the reading.
  3. Look for the obvious: a nail, a screw, a bulge, or a tire that is visibly flatter than the others.
  4. Fill each low tire to the door-jamb pressure at a gas-station or home air pump.
  5. If a tire keeps going low, drives down within a day, or is damaged, do not keep driving on it — it may have a puncture that needs repair.
  6. When in doubt about a tire's condition, do not drive on it — a low or damaged tire can fail at highway speed.
