Steps to fix transmission temperature warning light

  1. Pull over safely as soon as you can — a hot-transmission warning means heat is stressing the transmission right now.
  2. Put the car in park or neutral and let the engine idle for a few minutes so fluid keeps circulating and cools down.
  3. For a severe overheat, shut the engine off completely and wait 15 to 30 minutes before restarting.
  4. Avoid what makes it worse — heavy loads, towing, or crawling in stop-and-go traffic — until it is checked.
  5. Do not just clear the warning and keep going; low or burnt transmission fluid or a blocked cooler will overheat it again.
  6. When in doubt, do not drive — get it to a mechanic, since transmission damage from overheating can happen in miles, not days.
