Triangle with exclamation point light

A triangle with an exclamation point on your dashboard is the master warning light — a catch-all that means one or more systems detected a problem, from something as small as a door ajar or low coolant to a stability-control fault. Steps to fix triangle with exclamation point light

  1. Look at the message screen in the instrument cluster first — the triangle is a catch-all, and the cluster usually spells out which system actually triggered it.
  2. Note the color: a yellow triangle means have it checked soon, while a red one means an urgent safety risk — pull over safely and deal with it now.
  3. Rule out the simple causes — on some cars a door not fully shut or low coolant is enough to light the triangle.
  4. On many cars the triangle points at a stability or traction control fault, often a wheel-speed sensor — drive gently and leave extra room on slippery roads until it is checked.

  6. When in doubt, do not drive — a red triangle, or one paired with other warning lights, means have a mechanic check it before you go further.
