Doorbell not working

Steps to fix doorbell not working

  1. Confirm the failure: does nothing happen, or does the chime buzz without ringing? That points to button vs chime.
  2. Unscrew the doorbell button, touch its two low-voltage wires together briefly — if the chime rings, the BUTTON is bad; replace it.
  3. Open the chime unit and clean or gently free the striker plungers; dust and sticky plungers are a common no-ring.
  4. Find the transformer (often by the panel, in the basement, or in a closet) — a doorbell transformer puts out safe low voltage, but it wires into house 120V, so don't open its line side.
  5. If the button and chime are fine, the transformer may be dead — testing or replacing it at the 120V side is a licensed-electrician job.
