Faucet dripping

A dripping faucet is rarely the faucet failing — it's a worn washer, O-ring, or cartridge inside the handle wearing out. Left alone it wastes water and can stain the sink. Steps to fix faucet dripping

  1. Shut off the water at the valves under the sink and open the faucet to drain the line.
  2. Plug the drain so no small parts fall in, then pop off the decorative cap and unscrew the handle.
  3. Identify the faucet type — compression (washers), or cartridge / ball / ceramic-disc — before buying parts.
  4. Pull the worn washer, O-ring, or cartridge and take it to the store to match an exact replacement.
  5. Seat the new part, reassemble, turn the water back on slowly, and check for drips.
