  1. Check the display character by character — on many Frigidaire models the code reads 5Y EF, and it's the same fault: SY EF means the control lost feedback from the evaporator fan that circulates the cold air.
  2. Look at the air vents inside the freezer and fridge sections and pull food away from any vent it's pressed against — a blocked vent chokes the airflow the fan is trying to move.
  3. Move your food to a cooler, then unplug the refrigerator and leave the doors open for a full manual defrost — several hours, with towels down — so any ice encasing the fan blades melts completely.
