Garage door opens a few inches then stops

A garage door that opens only a few inches then stops or reverses is usually hitting a travel/force limit that's set wrong, binding on the track, or fighting a spring problem. The opener settings and track are checkable; the springs never are. Show SightLine the door and a friendly handyman persona keeps you well clear of the high-tension parts that can maim.

Steps to fix garage door opens a few inches then stops

  1. DANGER — read first: NEVER touch, loosen, or 'adjust' the TORSION SPRING across the top of the door or the lift cables. They hold enormous tension and can cause serious injury or death. Everything below stays away from them.
  2. Watch and listen: does it stop softly (a limit/force setting) or strain and jerk (binding or a spring problem)?
  3. Pull the manual release cord and lift the door BY HAND with the opener disengaged — if it's very heavy, won't stay put halfway, or a cable looks loose/off its drum, that's a broken spring or cable: stop and call a garage-door pro.
  4. If it moves smoothly by hand, the problem is the opener: check the up-travel and force settings (small dials or buttons on the opener) — set too low, it stops or reverses early.
  5. Look for obstructions or a bent spot in the track, and clear anything binding the rollers; re-engage the opener and test.
  6. If it still stops short with good balance, clear track, and correct limits, or if you suspect anything with the springs/cables, call a garage-door technician — spring work is never DIY.

Safety first: if a step calls for gas, a main water or sewer line, a service panel or main breaker, or a sealed refrigerant system, stop and call a licensed pro — Repair Copilot will tell you when you're there.
