Steps to fix garage door remote short range

  1. Replace the remote's battery first — a fading battery is the most common cause of shrinking range.
  2. Find the antenna wire hanging down from the opener motor head and make sure it's fully extended and not curled up or tucked away.
  3. Swap any LED or CFL bulb in the opener for an LED rated 'garage-door-opener compatible' or a plain incandescent — cheap LED bulbs emit radio interference that kills remote range (a very common culprit).
  4. Look for other new interference sources: a nearby WiFi device, a new LED fixture, or a smart-home gadget added around when the trouble started.
  5. Re-check range after each change; if a fresh battery and bulb swap fix it, you're done.
  6. If range is still tiny with a new battery, extended antenna, and good bulbs, the opener's logic board/receiver may be weak — that's an opener-repair call. Never touch the torsion spring or cables while working around the door.
