Garbage disposal humming

Steps to fix garbage disposal humming

  1. Turn the disposal OFF at the wall switch first — and NEVER put your hand down into the disposal, jammed or not.
  2. Unplug it under the sink (or trip its breaker) so it can't start while you're working on it.
  3. Find the hex/Allen wrench that came with it, fit it into the socket on the BOTTOM center of the unit, and crank back and forth to free the stuck impeller.
  4. Fish out whatever jammed it (a bone, a pit, a utensil) using tongs or pliers — never fingers.
  5. Press the little red RESET button on the bottom of the unit if it tripped, then restore power.
  6. Run cold water and switch it on; if it still only hums with nothing jammed, the motor is seized — replace the unit.
