Garbage disposal won't turn on

A garbage disposal that won't turn on — no hum, no click, nothing — is almost always electrical: a tripped reset button, a tripped breaker, or a GFCI outlet, not a dead motor. Steps to fix garbage disposal won't turn on

  1. Turn the wall switch OFF and NEVER put your hand down into the disposal — even a dead-seeming unit is treated as live until power is confirmed off.
  2. Reach under the sink and press the small red RESET button on the bottom of the disposal firmly until it clicks — a tripped reset is the number-one cause of a silent unit.
  3. Check your breaker panel for a tripped breaker labeled disposal or kitchen and flip it fully OFF, then ON.
  4. Look for a GFCI outlet under the sink or nearby (sometimes across the kitchen) with a popped RESET button and press it back in.
  5. Confirm the wall switch has power by testing the light or another outlet on the same circuit.
  6. If the reset, breaker, and GFCI all check out and it's still silent, the wall switch, wiring, or the disposal motor has failed — the motor is beyond a simple fix, so replace the unit or call an electrician/plumber.
