GFCI outlet won't reset

A GFCI outlet that won't reset is usually doing exactly what it should — it senses a real ground fault (often moisture or a bad appliance) and refuses to restore power. Steps to fix gfci outlet won't reset

  1. Unplug EVERYTHING on that outlet and any outlets downstream of it, then press reset — a faulty appliance is a very common cause and this isolates it.
  2. If it resets with nothing plugged in, plug items back one at a time to find the device causing the fault, and retire or repair that item.
  3. Check for moisture — outdoor, garage, bath, and kitchen GFCIs trip and won't reset when water gets into the receptacle; let it dry fully (and add a weatherproof cover outside).
  4. Make sure the outlet even has power: check the breaker for that circuit, since a GFCI can't reset if it's dead upstream.
  5. Look for a tripped GFCI further upstream (one GFCI often protects several outlets); reset that one first.
  6. If it's dry, nothing's plugged in, the breaker is on, and it still won't reset — the GFCI may be worn out (they last about 7-10 years) or miswired: replacing or rewiring it is licensed-electrician work, not a live-wire DIY.
