Thermostat short cycling

Steps to fix thermostat short cycling

  1. Replace the air filter first — a clogged filter is the single most common cause of short cycling because restricted airflow trips the system's safeties.
  2. Change the thermostat batteries; a weak battery makes a thermostat send erratic on/off signals.
  3. Check where the thermostat is mounted — if it's in direct sun, above a vent, or near a lamp or the kitchen, it misreads the temperature and cycles early; nothing wrong with the AC itself.
  4. Make sure the supply and return vents around the house are open and unblocked so the system can move air.
  5. Confirm the thermostat is set correctly (not on a tight swing/cycle-rate setting) and the wires behind it are seated.
  6. If the filter's fresh, the battery's new, and placement is fine but it still short cycles, the cause is deeper — low refrigerant, a frozen coil, or an oversized system — and that's an HVAC pro's diagnosis.
