Toilet ghost flushing

Toilet ghost flushing — the tank refilling by itself every so often — means water is silently leaking from the tank into the bowl, so the fill valve kicks on to top it back up. The usual cause is a worn flapper that no longer seals, or a refill tube pushed too far down the overflow. Steps to fix toilet ghost flushing

  1. Take off the tank lid and add a few drops of food coloring to the tank water; wait 20 minutes without flushing.
  2. If color shows up in the bowl, water is leaking past the flapper — that's your phantom flush.
  3. Inspect the flapper for warping, mineral crust, or a rough spot on the seat; a flapper that won't seal is the #1 cause and is a cheap swap.
  4. Turn off the water, flush to empty, unclip the old flapper, and install a matching size (usually 2-inch or 3-inch) with a little slack in the chain.
  5. Check the small refill tube: it should clip to the top of the overflow tube, NOT stick down inside it — pushed in too far it siphons water and mimics a ghost flush.
  6. Confirm the water level sits about an inch below the overflow top; if the leak persists after a new flapper, the flush-valve seat or a cracked tank may need a pro.
