Steps to fix water heater making popping sounds

  1. SCALD SAFETY: the water inside is hot enough to burn — don't drain it until it has cooled, and never set the thermostat above 120°F.
  2. Identify the noise: a popping or rumbling that tracks with the heating cycle is classic sediment, not a leak.
  3. Turn the heater to 'pilot' (gas) or OFF at the breaker (electric), and shut the cold-water supply valve on top.
  4. Attach a garden hose to the drain valve near the bottom, run it to a floor drain or outside, and drain a few gallons to flush loose sediment — open a hot tap upstairs to let it flow.
  5. For a stubborn tank, drain it fully, briefly turn the cold supply on and off to stir and rinse the sediment, then refill completely BEFORE restoring heat (never heat an empty electric element — it'll burn out).
  6. If the tank is old, rusty, leaking, or the noise doesn't ease after flushing, call a licensed plumber — a sediment-scaled tank near end of life is a replacement, not a repair.
