Steps to fix whirlpool fridge not cooling (freezer works)

  1. Listen at the freezer for the evaporator fan — a steady hum is good; silence or grinding points to a failed fan motor that stops moving cold air to the fridge.
  2. Check the interior vents between freezer and fridge aren't blocked by packed food or ice.
  3. Do a full manual defrost: unplug the fridge, empty it, and leave the doors open 12-24 hours with towels down — a frosted-over evaporator behind the freezer back panel blocks airflow to the fridge.
  4. Do the dollar-bill test on both door gaskets and clean or replace a seal that leaks warm air in.
  5. Wipe dry, plug back in, and allow 24 hours to recover before deciding it's fixed.
  6. If the fridge stays warm after a full defrost, the evaporator fan motor or a defrost part (heater, thermostat, or timer) has failed and needs an appliance-repair pro.
