Steps to fix window ac smells bad

  1. STOP if it smells like burning plastic, hot electronics, or smoke — that's not mildew: unplug it immediately and don't run it until it's checked.
  2. For a musty/moldy 'dirty sock' smell, unplug the unit before cleaning anything.
  3. Pull the filter and wash it; a damp, dusty filter is a mold farm and the most common source of the odor — dry it fully.
  4. Wipe the front coils and blower with a coil cleaner or a mild soap solution, and clean out the drain pan and channels where standing water breeds mildew.
  5. Make sure the unit drains properly (tilted slightly toward the outside) so water doesn't sit and go sour inside.
  6. Run it on fan-only for a bit to dry the interior after cleaning; if a strong musty smell returns fast or you see heavy mold inside the sealed section, replacing the unit may be the healthier call.
